Karen \nPeterson Smith, 83, of Butler, PA, passed away on \nMarch 21, 2021 at the UPMC Presbyterian. \n\nShe was born December 28, 1937 in Greensburg, \nPennsylvania to the late Nils Peterson and the late \nMary Chislock Peterson. \n\nKaren graduated from Greensburg High School, where \nshe was a cheerleader and May Queen. Following \ngraduation, she attended a business school in \nPittsburgh. Karen was a member of the Arthritis \nGroup and the Butler Prayer Group. She was a caring \nselfless woman who enjoyed being with her three \nchildren and nine grandchildren. Her favorite place \nto vacation with family was Stone Harbor, NJ. She \nwas an avid sports follower of Pirates Baseball, \nSteeler Football, and University of Pittsburgh \nBasketball. Karen enjoyed attending sporting events \nand other school activities of her grandchildren. \nShe had a deep love of sports.\n\nKaren was very proud of her Swedish heritage and had \na favorite saying, "If you are lucky enough to be \nSwedish, then you are lucky enough." She was a \npinnacle of her catholic faith and a dedicated \nmember of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic \nChurch.\n\nKaren is survived by her husband, Joseph J. Smith, \nwho she married on September 12, 1959; two sons, \nMark (Jody) Smith of Alpharetta, GA, Robert (Lora) \nSmith of Cranberry Twp, PA; one daughter, Joan \n(Richard) Hetherington of Charlotte, NC; nine \ngrandchildren, Kara Smith, Kylee Smith, Erik Smith, \nMatthew Smith, Michael Smith, Mark Smith, Luke \nSmith, Rebecca (Rodrigo) Rodriguez, Timothy \n(Victoria) Hetherington; a twin brother, Paul (Mona) \nPeterson of Ann Arbor, MI; one sister-in-law, Joela \nPeterson of Latrobe, PA, and numerous nieces and \nnephews. \n\nIn addition to her parents, she was preceded in \ndeath by her two brothers, William Peterson, and \nBernard Peterson, and one sister-in-law, Marilyn \nPeterson.\n\nFriends will be received Wednesday, March 24, 2021, \n4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, \nInc., 124 East North Street Butler, PA.\n\nA Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, \nMarch 25, 2021, 10:00 am at the St. Michael The \nArchangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Avenue \nButler, PA.\n\nBurial will take place in the Greensburg Catholic \nCemetery.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the \nSt Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 \nCenter Ave, Butler, PA 16001.
