Karen Marie Bowser McCurdy, 65, of \nErie PA passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 after a \nlong struggle with lung disease. The disease took her \nlife but it never took her spirit or changed her \npositive outlook. \n\nBorn in Butler on October 15, \n1953, she was the daughter of the late John B. Bowser \nJr. and Lillian Wood Bowser McCulloch.\n \n\nShe married her husband Gary on \nSeptember 15, 1972. They resided in Butler until 1998 \nwhen they moved to Erie for Gary's job.\n \n\nKaren graduated from Butler High \nSchool in 1971 and Butler County Community College in \nJuly 1985 with an Associates of Applied Science Degree \nin Nursing and earned a perfect score on the state \nlicensing boards.\n \n\nAs a member of Trinity \nPresbyterian Church in Butler she served as a Deacon, \ntaught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and the \nchurch's Wednesday night young people's program (LOGOS).\n \n\nShe excelled at sewing and \ncrocheting and often made clothes for herself, her \nchildren, and her grandchildren. She also made many \nafghans and christening outfits for family and friends.\n \n\nShe worked as a long-distance \ntelephone operator with ConQuest for several years and \nadvanced to be Operator In Charge of her shift.\n \n\nHer hard work for the Butler \nFamily Support Group led to the McCurdy family being \nselected as the Pennsylvania National Guard Family \nSupport Group "Family of the Year" (a statewide honor) \nin 1988.\n \n\nShe loved to play board and card \ngames but she had the most fun going to bingo with her \nbest friend Debbie, or at the casino playing slots. She \ncould spend hours searching the Lake Erie shore for \nbeach glass. She was fascinated with owls and had a \nlarge collection of the birds made of various materials. \nShe enjoyed reading and always looked forward to going \nto the library. When traveling to the library became too \ndifficult, she downloaded books from her favorite \nauthors to her Kindles.\n \n\nKaren is survived by Gary, her \nhusband of 46 years. A daughter, Heather Goehring of \nButler, a son, Scott (Jess) McCurdy of Plain Grove, 5 \ngrandchildren, a brother Jack Bowser of Reno Nevada, a \nsister Sandi (Mel) Krogen of Yuma Arizona, a number of \nnieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her dog (Bella).\n \n\nIn accordance with her wishes \nthere will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorial \ndonations may be made to the donor's local library, the \nAmerican Lung Association or the American Cancer \nSociety.\n \n\nYou faced your illness bravely \nKaren...now may you rest in peace. \n \n\nArrangements were completed by \nThompson-Miller Funeral Home.
