James D. Thorne, Ph.D, 86, \nof Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on November 6, \n2018 at the Community Living Center at VA Butler \nHealthcare .\n\nHe was the son of George and Wilma Thorne. He was \nborn on August 2, 1932 and raised in Meridian. He \nplayed in all the sports offered at the Meridian \nAthletic Club, learned to play tennis at an early \nage, and was an avid model plane enthusiast.\n\nUpon graduation from Butler H.S., he joined the PA \nAir National Guard and at the start of the Korean \nWar, joined the USAF. James served in Korea as a air \ntraffic controller and returned to enroll in \nSlippery Rock College. He then met and married the \nlove of his life, Doris Bodesheim.\n\nHe taught at Butler H.S. and then worked as an air \ntraffic controller. He resigned from the FAA after \nhis family survived the 1964 Alaska earthquake. Jim \nearned his Ph.D in Education from the University of \nPittsburgh, later becoming a faculty member and \nadministrator at Grove City College. In 1994 the \nFellowship of Christian Educators at Grove City \nCollege established the Dr. James D. Thorne \nEducation Award.\n\nJim and Doris enjoyed six years of retirement in \nFlorida where he spent time fishing on the Gulf and \nplaying tennis. They then returned to PA.\n\nAlways active in the church, Jim was a member of the \nSession that established Westminster Presbyterian \nChurch in Butler.\n\nHe was instrumental in founding and directing the \nFisherman Gospel Quartet affiliated with Butler's \nFirst Methodist Church. After he and Doris moved to \nConcordia Retirement Community, he sang with the \nConcordia Chorale, directed the Troubadours, the \nChoraliers, and the Concordia Singers.\n\nHe will be fondly remembered as a dedicated husband, \nfather and grandfather.\n\nDr. Thorne is survived by his wife Doris Bodesheim \nThorne whom he married on March 24, 1956; one \ndaughter Suann (Ray) Martell of Whidbey Island, WA; \none son Dr. James Dana Thorne, Ph.D, Lt. Col, USAF \n(retired) (Mary) of Arlington, VA; grandchildren \nJeanette (Justin) Lovern and Daniel Charles (Kelly) \nMartell and several nieces and nephews. \n\nIn addition to his parents, he was preceded in death \nby his brother Kendall Thorne. \n\nFriends will be received at Thompson-Miller Funeral \nHome, Inc. 124 East North Street, Butler, PA 16001 \non Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 12:00 (noon) to \n2:00 pm .\n\nA Funeral service will be held at Thompson-Miller \nFuneral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, on \nSunday, November 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Jack \nHartman, Director of Chaplain Services of Concordia \nLutheran Ministries.\n\nPrivate burial at St. John's Reformed Church \nCemetery.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, Dr. Thorne requested donations \nto the Dr. James D. Thorne Education Award, c/o \nGrove City College, 100 Campus Dr., Grove City, PA \n16127.\n\nMilitary Honors will be conducted at the funeral \nhome by Officers and Members of the American Legion \nPost #117, Butler, American Legion Post #778, \nLyndora, and VFW Post #249, Butler.
